Flapper Skate, formerly the Common Skate, is the largest species, found in British and Irish waters. They can reach 8 feet long and live 75 years, serving as apex predators that significantly influence ecosystems. The term 'Common' is now ironic, as they are critically endangered on the IUCN Red List, facing greater peril than the Blue Whale or Mountain Gorilla. 'Uncommon' explores the efforts of scientists and conservationists working to save this crucial species from extinction.
